Rivanna Medical LLC is a medical device company formed from a collaboration between graduate-level students at the Darden Business School and Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia. RIVANNA Medical's Accuro device uses an ultrasound-based system to allow anesthesiologists to quickly and accurately locate where to place a needle for an epidural or spinal . The firm's core mission is commercialization of a handheld platform of technologies based on medical ultrasound. A variety of applications are designed for intuitive needle guidance via affordable, smart-phone-sized devices. Initial FDA clearance includes guidance for spinal anesthesia.that will lower the cost of health care & reduce exposure to ionizing radiation from X-ray-based medical imaging. Rivanna Medical’s proprietary technologies can provide distinct advantages over standard ultrasound including bone imaging with radically sharper contrast and reduced noise along with 3D imaging capabilities in a low-cost portable ultrasound system.
