The Oklahoma Venture Forum honored two state technology-based businesses on Thursday at its 2011 Venture of the Year and Most Promising New Business Awards banquet.

Ardmore-based Amethyst Research Inc. was named Venture of the Year. The company specializes in materials and manufacturing process technologies to improve the performance of infrared devices used by the military, law enforcement and Homeland Security.

Amethyst Research, formed in 2004, is a privately held corporation with a long-term goal of dramatically reducing the cost of high-performance infrared imagers.

VADovations Inc. won the award for Most Promising New Business.

The Oklahoma City-based biotechnology company, led by Dr. James Long, is developing a miniature blood pump designed to treat congestive heart failure.

The event, sponsored by the Oklahoma Business Roundtable, was at the Skirvin Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City.

Bob Funk, whose company Express Employment Professionals won Venture of the Year in 1993, served as keynote speaker for the event.
