A highway-speed toll-collection system is proposed. This system, called ExpressTag , uses an innovative radio tag that communicates with a stationary road interrogator to identify the passing of tagged vehicles at speeds up to 120 MPH. Unique to ExpressTag is a proprietary communications technique which guarantees a higher level of data confidence over any other automatic identification system. ExpressTag is inexpensive, simple to use and offers substantial time and dollar savings to the traveler as well as the collection authorities.Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications Of Results:ExpressTag can speed up traffic flow in congested sections yielding a throughput increase of hundreds of vehicles per hour. In addition, toll-collection facilities can be substantially reduced saving up to 40( overhead costs per transaction.
