A multimedia software system will be designed to support language arts instruction for children with learning disabilities. This system will assist teachers in implementing and managing whole language and language experience approaches (LEA) in mainstream and special education settings. In Phase I, McLean Media will design, create and evaluate a small prototype software package for primary students. Although LEA methods have been used successfully in teaching students with and without learning disabilities, structured multimedia software packages to support such methods are limited. Word processing, multimedia presentation and CDROM storybook programs all have potential benefits for students with learning disabilities. However, a single software system could combine the best features of these software types to allow teachers and students to use the computer to create, manipulate and share text, pictures and sounds for pre-produced and original stories. A database structure will allow teachers to build a classroom collection of pre-packaged and original computer-based stories and activities and to draw from that library to create and monitor individualized assignments for students with varied needs. The program design will promote multisensory, individualized, inclusive and collaborative learning. An object-oriented authoring approach will improve software performance and production efficiency.Summary of results and implications:If successful, Phase I will demonstrate the feasibility of producing a multimedia software package to support language experience and whole language approaches in special education. In Phase II, McLean Media will revise and expand the Phase I computer program, produce a full prototype package and conduct evaluation to study product design and production, implementation and educational impact.
