A research and evaluation project to determine the feasibility and form of a ftilly automated nationwide direct dial telephone number directory assistance service for the deaf containing telephone numbers of all individuals and businesses owning TDD/=s, which will be accessible by TDDs (Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf), =s, and personal computers. The pr 'ect will evaluate the technical means of delivery, will evaluate computer Oi hardware. will produce computer software to determine the best user interface and data organization for fast and logical searches, and will evaluate different approaches to building the data base of necessary names, addresses and telephone numbers.

Anticipated Results:
This project will determine the most operationally effective and most cost efficient means of making a national directory assistance service of TDD telephone numbers accessible to the deaf via TDDS, TTYS. and personal computers. The project will determine the operational needs. including computer hardware required. will produce the required software for evaluation of the svstem. and will develop a friendly, intuitive and efficient user interface. This study will demonstrate the economic benefits to the deaf community and the related highly beneficial social empowerment.
