New technology is needed to replace 3He-based neutron proportional detectors for neutron scattering. This proposal addresses this need via development of a novel plasma panel based neutron detector designed to take advantage of low cost, large area, plasma display panel TV technology. A new type of micropattern gas detector for neutrons is proposed that offers the potential for high efficiency, high position spatial and temporal resolution, high gamma rejection with large area capability at low cost. The proposed neutron detector takes advantage of a new class of radiation sensors known as plasma panel sensors (PPS) and is derived from the proven technologies used in producing plasma display panels (PDP) for TVs. We have already demonstrated the key processes required to fabricate the proposed detector structure. The Phase-I program will focus on device fabrication and device testing, along with modeling and simulations. Commercial Applications & amp; Other

Benefits:
The three most important commercial applications for the proposed plasma panel based neutron detector are homeland security, neutron detection and monitoring of nuclear reactors, and oil and gas exploration. Other applications include materials research, and neutron detection for personnel safety in high intensity particle beams environments, such as those used for both research and the treatment of cancer e.g. proton beam therapy. For homeland security the proposed detectors could be used for active and passive radiation detection systems including: portal, parcel, cargo and vehicle monitors/radiography, as well as interdiction, nuclear verification and nonproliferation monitoring.
