Colossal Magneto-Resistive "CMR" magnetic perovskite films have electrical resistance that is extremely sensitive to applied magnetic field. CMR films offer tremendous potential for magnetic sensor and recording applications. This potential is presently limited by the lack of available means to manufacture high quality CMR films. Jet Process Corporation proposes to develop its innovative Jet Vapor Deposition, process for manufacture of CMR materials. The JVD process has already been successfully developed for another important class of perovskite oxides: ferroelectric thin films integrated with silicon. This effort will be carried out in collaboration with General Motors Hughes Research Labs in a project targeting development of magnetic sensors for automotive applications. There are many other potential applications and markets for CMR film technology. Success in Phase I will lay a solid basis for a Phase II effort in which we will scale up and automate JVD processes for high volume, low cost commercial manufacture of CMR films and devices.
