New technology that facilitates detection and management of wildfires on forest lands is critical for enhancing the protection of the nation's forested lands and forest resources. The new technology will also help maintain the existence of healthy and productive forest ecosystems as well as provide new information to fire service personnel for understanding wildfire events. Intellisense Systems Inc. (ISI) proposes to investigate and develop a new Fire Weather Observation Sensor (FWOS) system to meet this critical need. ISI will use a combination of newly developed sensors and commercially available sensors housed in a unique hand portable fire weather system containing on-board power harvesting and storage as well as satellite data transmission capabilities. FWOS will act as a standalone unattended field deployable sensor for remote measurements of fire weather related data and transmit the data via satellite communication from anywhere on the globe. During the Phase I development each new sensor will be tested on bench top setups and demonstrated during outdoor testing. In parallel the system architecture of the fully integrated Phase II prototype will be developed for near-term field deployment. The Phase II development will involve integration of both newly developed and existing sensors a solar energy harvesting unit communication capabilities and electronics hardware integrated into a single operational prototype.

Phase II

Contract Number: 2020-08020

New technology will also help maintain the health and productivity of the nation's forest ecosystems as well as provide new information to fire service personnel for understanding and managing wildfires. To meet this critical need Intellisense Systems Inc. investigated and successfully developed a new Fire Weather Observation Sensor (FWOS) system in a Phase I effort. Intellisense used a combination of newly developed and commercially available sensors to demonstrate the feasibility of a unique hand-portable fire weather system that consists of on-board power harvesting and storage as well as satellite data transmission capabilities.
