Cornerstone Research Group (CRG) is reducing the variability and lead-time associated with production of carbon-carbon composites using MG Resins, a unique, high char yield material system as a replacement to typical phenolic and pitch precursors. In Phase I, CRG proved feasibility through characterization of C/C composites made with MG Resin, in which no densification steps were conducted. Very high char yields were achieved with MG when compared to legacy phenolic materials. Furthermore, x-ray diffraction (XRD) data suggests that graphite is starting to form at relatively low temperatures. In Phase II, the program emphasis will shift towards maturing the technology and positioning the material to support ongoing, high priority DoD programs. Advantages resulting from CRGs proposed plan will provide MDA, other government agencies, and commercial customers methods and materials for reliably producing high-temperature capable, C/C composites in less time than is currently available.Approved for Public Release | 18-MDA-9817 (23 Oct 18)
