The use of tactical information assistants, such as head-mounted and wrist-mounted tactical information displays (TIDs) has the potential to enhance both personal and team performance. Head and wrist-mounted information displays will provide warfighters with a means of receiving tactical information wirelessly. This Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) topic, SOCOM01-006, sought to address this need through the development of a head-mounted and wrist-mounted Tactical Information Display (TID). Under this SBIR, Trident Systems developed wrist and head-mounted versions for interfacing via wired and wireless connections to a variety of host equipment including personal computers, PDAs, and dedicated sensors in a wireless personal area networking (WPAN) environment. The system captures display imagery from a body worn computer, digitizes and compresses this imagery, and transmits it to the body-worn display. This effort culminated in the development of Trident Systems' wearable display, the WD 1.0, which provides a ruggedized, light weight, full-color display that leaves the user's hands free. The system assists the user by providing real-time situational awareness, Command and Control (C2) and Combat Identification (CID) of both friendly and enemy troops on a battlefield. It enables the collection and dissemination of information including imagery, Global Positioning Information (GPS) information, threat detection information, and direct downlink of live video streams from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to units on the ground.

Military and Commercial Significance
Trident Systems has received Phase III funding from the Department of Defense (DoD) of roughly $9.5 million under contract H92222-04-C-0035.

Trident Systems, Inc. has been awarded nearly $20 million in Phase III funding from the Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Command (SPAWAR) Systems Center Atlantic under contract number N65236-06-D-7874.

The wearable display has been procured by DoD and various prime contractors for inclusion into man-wearable systems. It can be used in a variety of applications in the military, law enforcement and emergency services as well as in the commercial sector with application for the construction and trucking industries, among others.
