Southwest Sciences Inc. of Santa Fe has been awarded a $406,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to develop technology for the early detection of conditions that can lead to heart attacks.

The business will use the grant to develop optical imaging of diseased arteries, providing a non-invasive method for examining different layers of an artery to identify potential ruptures.

Southwest Sciences, founded in 1985 to perform research and develop technology in combustion, atmospheric chemistry, imaging and optical sciences, was awarded the Small Business Innovation Research grant through HHS and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
