It was expected to be worth nearly $1 billion over the next eight years and the new National Air and Space Intelligence Center support contract seems to be living up to the hype.

To date, officials tell me more than $50 million in work has been issued to the three winners since NASIC began using the contract -- called ATEP II -- about six months ago.

Knowing where the money is flowing is key to understanding what companies, and their many subcontractors, will be in growth mode. Much of the work is expected to be done in the Dayton region, as NASIC is headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

McLean, Va.-based IT firm Invertix Corp., which has a Fairborn office, took the top spot with $31.1 million in work. Of the 15 orders it has won, Invertix earned nine for analytics and operational support, five for research and tool development, and one has been for general support.

Invertix is part of McLean, Va.-based Altamira Technologies Corp. Its partners include Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. -- one of the winners on the original Advanced Technical Exploitation Program contract -- as well as local firms JJR Solutions in Beavercreek, Fairborn-based The Design Knowledge Co., Dayton-based Quantrum LLC and Beavercreek-based MacAulay-Brown Inc.

Other work on NASIC's ATEP II contract breaks down as follow:

Hunstville, Ala.-based Radiance Technologies, which has a Riverside office, won $14.1 million in work, including 10 orders. Seven of the orders have been for analytics and operational support, two have been for research and tool development and one has been for general support.

Chantilly, Va.-based Integrity Applications Inc., which has a Beavercreek office, earned $8.5 million in work, including 12 orders. Seven of these task orders have been for analytics and operational support, four have been for research and tool development and one has been for general support.

The amount of work to these three companies should increase as work on the expiring ATEP contract is wrapped up by the former winners.

Another business item from NASIC this week -- Although officials are still working to select a contractor, a ceremonial groundbreaking is planned for Friday morning on a new $29.5 million, 58,000 square-foot addition at NASIC. Much of this new Foreign Materiel Exploitation facility will be used to analyze -- and find ways to defeat -- the weapons of adversaries.

NASIC produces "predictive intelligence" for air, space and cyberspace for the Air Force, as well as policy makers and others in the Defense Department. More than 3,100 people at Wright-Patt work for NASIC, which has a $350 million annual budget.
