North Haven manufacturer Precision Combustion Inc. has received a Department of Energy grant to develop a catalytic reactor for converting natural gas directly into commodity chemicals.

The Small Business Innovation Research Phase II grant will fund PCI's efforts to convert shale-gas methane into fuels or value-added chemicals by avoiding the large intensive processing units required by current technologies.

Since PCI is entering Phase II of the SBIR program, it received $999,362 for the funding of its research. The next phase, if the company reaches it, would be to commercialize the product.

PCI's proposed product would be deployed to shale fields were oil and natural gas were being harvested, where the catalytic reactor could be used to convert the natural resources into chemicals like ethylene, which is a feedstock for fuels.
