A $750,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration will help NOHMs Technologies Inc.—an electronics manufacturer at Eastman Business Park—to develop the next generation of space batteries, Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Perinton, announced Monday.

"This grant offers an exciting opportunity to develop the next-generation battery technology needed to power human activities here on Earth and in space," said Richard Delmerico, CEO of NOHMs Technologies and a former Eastman Kodak Co. executive, in a statement.

Innovative battery technology potentially could increase the operational range and payload capabilities of spacecraft while reducing operational costs, officials said.

"NASA's partnership with NOHMs Technologies highlights Rochester's growing advanced battery industry, which I am committed to strengthening," Slaughter said in a statement. "This grant will help grow our local economy and I congratulate NOHMs Technologies on this achievement."

NOHMs Technologies will work with the NASA John Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. The team will work to develop lightweight, safe lithium sulfur batteries with twice the specific energies of contemporary lithium-ion batteries, she said.

In February, Slaughter served as host to Army Research Lab director Thomas Russell at Eastman Business Park. NOHMs Technologies officials were among those to meet with Russell.
