Less than a mile from Minnetronix headquarters, Team 2491 No Mythic (No Mythic) spends thousands of hours each year planning, designing, building and testing a robot for the annual FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). Sponsored by Minnetronix, No Mythic is an impressive blend of more than two dozen highly motivated science and technology minded young men and women from three area charter schools. For the past ten years, No Mythic teams have participated in FRC, whose mission is to inspire young people to be leaders in science and technology by engaging them in exciting mentor based programs.
No Mythic works year round developing and fine tuning their skills in anticipation of FRC's annual theme announcement, which is followed by a six week design and build season. During this intense period, adults mentor students through the process of creating a robot that is programmed to accomplish prescribed tasks both against and in alliance with other competitors. To achieve this, the team is divided into subspecialties focusing on programming, engineering, manufacturing, marketing, fundraising and accounting.
Minnetronix has supported No Mythic since the team's founding in 2005, providing both sponsorship and in-kind support. QA engineer Kelli Greenberg spends hundreds of hours mentoring the design and build teams, an opportunity she sought out shortly after joining Minnetronix. "I helped start a FIRST team when I was a student at Rose Hulman and I was eager to connect with a team here," said Greenberg. "It's extremely fun and rewarding to work with these students, many of whom find they are passionate about engineering through this process." Greenberg also joined forces with Dan Burch, Corey Brown, Mike Poppy and Rebecca Haag to host CAD workshops for No Mythic, which resulted in significant time savings and design advantages for the team.
The theme for this year's game is Recycle Rush. No Mythic will enter the first round of competition at the Northern Lights regional event in Duluth from February 26 -- 28, followed by the North Star regional event in Minneapolis from April 2-4. The team hopes to advance to the championship event in St. Louis in May.
