Cohera Medical Inc., a North Shore-based maker of medical adhesives, is moving its headquarters to Raleigh to access workers experienced in the medical device industry, CEO Patrick Daly said.

Three-quarters of the company's Pittsburgh workers will make the move by the end of March, he said. The remaining workers who do not move will lose their jobs when the office closes in November. He declined to say how many people are employed at the Pittsburgh office.

"Pittsburgh's been great for us. But for the next phase of our growth, we need to go where there are a lot of medical device people," Daly said by phone from Raleigh. "This is a hub for that."

The move also made sense because the company's distribution and sales operations are in Raleigh, which is part of the so-called "Research Triangle" in North Carolina -- a cluster of medical technology companies anchored by research from North Carolina State University, Duke University and University of North Carolina.

Nearly 500 life sciences companies are in the Raleigh area, according to Wake County, North Carolina's economic development agency.

Cohera had a total of 22 workers in February, including employees in Europe, where it sells two surgical sealant products. At that time, Daly said the company could more than double its workforce during the next year. The company in October raised $50 million from investors to expand sales of an abdominoplasty adhesive and for clinical trials of a new product, a bowel sealant.

Cohera was founded in 2006 with technology developed at the University of Pittsburgh.
