On the horizon is a day in which cancer is conquered. UC Davis Health System is developing new methods of treating cancer to give every patient a better chance for a cure. In fact, researchers here are testing microdoses of cancer-fighting drugs to individualize treatment for patients diagnosed with bladder cancer.
Some cancer cells respond to chemotherapy, and some do not. But chemotherapy can also be very toxic and harmful to healthy organs and tissues. UC Davis researchers, in partnership with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, have discovered how to study a tumor's DNA at the molecular level.
This innovation allows physicians to test a tiny fraction—or microdose—of chemotherapy on a patient's tumor to predict whether their cancer will respond before full treatment is prescribed. Though in the early stages and not yet available to patients, this experimental treatment is showing promising results and could lead to clinical trials in the near future.
Microdosing. It's the future of cancer care. And daybreak is fast approaching.
