Agro Biosciences Inc. is expanding its lab space at the Milwaukee County Research Park's Technology Innovation Center, the company president said earlier this month.

The five-man operation now takes up offices and about 500 square feet of lab space at the Wauwatosa research park. The expansion will up that space to 1,150 square feet.

The new space will house labs centered on the development of more natural alternatives to common growth hormone antibiotics used to grow turkeys, said company president Tom Rehberger.

Most of the cost will be absorbed into the park's research development fund, a move that was approved along with the build-out April 8. Outfitting it with equipment will run about $200,000 for Agro Biosciences, Rehberger said. Additionally, two new staff will bring the company to seven employees.

Rehberger began Agro BioSciences in March 2013, moving to the research park in April of that year. Previously, Rehberger served as vice president and co-founder of Pewaukee-based Agtech Products, a high-growth microbial sciences company acquired in 2006 by Denmark's Danisco A/S.
