Silicon Kidney LLC is a small biotechnology company focusing on the construction of implantable bioartifical kidneys using silicone membrane technology. The company's principal also has interests in testing this silicon membrane technology for other biomedical applications. The company aims to commercialize the silicone membrane technology developed as part of an artifical kidney project funded (beginning in 2015 via a $6 million grant) by NIH's National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. The NIH grant was awarded to the laboratories of Dr. Shuvo Roy, a bioengineering professor at the University of California in San Francisco, and Dr. William Fissell, a nephrologist and engineer at Vanderbilt University. Roy and Fissell have ownership stakes in Silicon Kidney LLC.
