The ECR process begins when microwaves are injected in a volume, at the same frequency as a corresponding magnetic field is applied inside the volume, which contains a low pressure gas. The alternating electric field of the microwaves and free electrons in the gas increase the perpendicular kinetic energy. In turn, the energized free electrons collide with the atoms and molecules of the gas in the volume, causing ionization if the kinetic energy is larger than the atom molecule ionization energy. The resulting ions depends on the gas type used and may be pure, a compound gas, or a vapor of a solid or liquid material.
