Apto Orthopaedics Corporation, a venture of Austen BioInnovation Insitute and Akron Children's Hospital, is medical device and biotechnology company developing non-invasive methods of implant adjustment. As of 2014, the company was developing growin rods for early onset scoliosis. Scoliosis is an abnormal curving of the spine and is typically treated by the implantation of rods. With early onset scoliosis, the rods must be periodically lengthened to account for growth. Normally this is an invasive and thus dangerous procedure. Apto is developing rods which can be adjusted with only a minimally invasive procedure. Using a rotating magnet, the rods can be adjusted from outside the body.
