Applied Sciences Laboratory offer a wide range of services. These include: Advanced Computing Applications - eg ASL develops highly specialized, rule-based expert software applications used to predict the performance of microwave and laser weapon systems. The "Heimdall" microwave simulation system serves as the U.S. standard for forecasting the capability of foreign systems. For the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratories, ASL develops and enhances data acquisition and control systems; Spacecraft Thermal Engineering - Under prime contract to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), ASL conducts detailed design, evaluation, and testing of spacecraft thermal control systems developed for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Thermal Protection Materials - for NASA and NSF, ASL develops specialized thermal protection materials. These materials show promise for advanced high- and low-temperature applications for space- and ground-based systems as well as the potential for specialized optical properties. We perform theoretical analyses of thermal radiation transport through materials; properties are verified experimentally at the company's thermophysics laboratory. Education Research and Technology Development -for U.S. Department of Education, ASL conducts education research programs that focus on the identification and resolution of unique needs that impede the academic performance of children. In partnership with community groups and the federal government, we are performing research to determine the educational needs of the United States-Mexico border region and the environmental factors that impact academic performance. Speech Recognition Systems - for U.S. Department of Education, ASL is developing speech-recognition systems that support the educational needs of hearing-impaired children. Environmental Services - for DOE, ASL supports various environmental management programs at the Department's Headquarters, Albuquerque and Idaho Operations Offices, Carlsbad Area Office, and Environmental Measurements Laboratory. Project areas include: environmental compliance and assessments, restoration and waste management of sites, development of information systems, resource management, technology evaluations, and the development of international and domestic partnerships. Technology Transfer - for U.S. Department of Energy, ASL leads contractor support for the exchange of innovative environmental technologies with Mexico's government, academic and industry sectors. In support of the National Laboratories, ASL led contractor support for international technology cooperation that yielded both the import and export of technologies.
