The proposed Phase I project will determine the feasibility of using guar gum polymers and native litter for the protection and repair of streambanks in riparian areas. These areas, adversely impacted by livestock grazing, represent the most biologically productive areas in the Federal land holdings. The proposed treatment process, called STABLEPAK, stabilizes streambank environments reducing erosion and protecting fish and wildlife habitat. This process can be used prior to, during, or after an insult to the riparian area. STABLEPAK, an organically based tackifier system, utilizes guar (galactomannan polymer) and local litter to form strong, biodegradable surface which promotes vegetation growth and restricts erosion. The process is easy to use, light weight and cost effective. We will determine if guar gum polymers can combine with native material in a consistent manner and provide soil stability to streambanks. Our research effort will include varying guar gum combinations and application methods including backpack and mortar and pail at three different erosive environments. In addition, site testing will be performed to determine the durability of the guar gum solution in native environments.

Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications of Research:
: We anticipate that guar based tackifiers will combine with native material to provide stability and an environment for revegetation to occur. This process will be marketed to Federal land managers and users as a product to protect and repair damaged streambanks. Future applications include any eroded or damaged soil system that needs a resting period to reestablish structural strength or recovery from toxic substances.
