The project can be described as a research effort that will result in a robust design of a next generation Portable Wireless Monitoring Station for SOF tactical users. The design will fully exploit current COTS equipment while new approaches will be developed as needed. The phase one effort is a four-month effort. The work is divided into 5 major tasks: 1) Requirements Analysis - What do the users really need?; 2) Industry Survey - What already exists to meet those needs?; 3) Engineering trades - Based on the outputs of 1 and 2, what will give the users the most for their investment; 4) Design System - Design a wireless monitoring system based on 1, 2, and 3. 5) Demonstration - Sonetech will demonstrate automatic signal classification of a target signal; 6) Design Plan - Prepare and deliver a detailed design plan for a Portable Wireless Monitoring Station. Dr. Harvey Woodsum, President and CEO will supervise all phases of work, while senior members of the technical staff will carry out the day-to-day activities associated with the task. In order to insure the successful completion of the research effort Sonetech Corporation will rely on its strong background in system design, DSP, algorithm development and signal classification. The algorithms and hardware developed during the SBIR effort could be imbedded not only in JTWS but in other similar monitoring systems as well. Further a working monitoring system that is cable of detecting and classifying and tracking threats will be in high demand by border patrol, coast guard personnel and other law enforcement agencies involved in homeland defense.
