This Phase I innovation research project will develop a fuel cell/battery hybrid system to power and store energy for micro-aerial vehicles (MAVs). The objective of this small business innovation research project is to develop a hybrid power system capable of powering MAVs for extended flight times as well as providing increased power for payload packages. Current battery technologies are unable to supply sufficient energy for extended periods. Fuel cells are unable to provide the short-term peak power demands for these systems. The proposed concept combines power sources to extend run time or enhance power capability, while minimizing system weight or volume. By combing the power density of secondary batteries and the energy density of fuel cells, a hybrid system could supply both the power and energy demands of mission profiles. Leveraging each technology’s strengths current flight times are anticipated to double.
