Responding to trauma cases effectively requires an understanding of underlying anatomy and pathologies. A training system can help develop a student's understanding by displaying the internal anatomy in a meaningful context--the context of an actual patient. Augmented Reality provides exactly this type of visualization, showing computer generated images in a real-world context. ToLTech proposes to enhance the effectiveness of mannequin-based training simulators with Augmented Reality, utilizing our experience in building and interacting with virtual anatomy.

Augmented Reality (AR) for health care training requires AR technologies, computer training technologies, and the effective presentation of medical/anatomical data that is both accurate and relevant to simulated trauma. We will: extend our AR capabilities developed in Phase I, generalizing them across three types of workspaces; develop a process for fitting our highly accurate models of anatomy to a given trauma by enhancing our current FEM-based techniques; and modify our company''s existing training products to function within AR workspaces, developing better software tools for authoring lessons;
