This Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I project will develop an innovative high power narrowband tunable source of terahertz radiation (terahertz laser) by utilizing the exchange interaction in magnetic materials. The key technical objectives include achieving critical pumping at which terahertz laser will lase. The research activities under this award include: 1) designing of a basic terahertz laser; 2) preparation of suitable magnetic films; 3) preparation of experimental setup; and 4) conduction of the proof-of-principle experiments. If successful the outcome of this project will enhance scientific understanding of the fundamental properties of the selected magnetic materials. The proposed activity will enhance technological potential of the U. S. by providing a high power narrowband tunable source of terahertz radiation to the market place. The proposed terahertz laser will contribute to a broad range of applications, including medical imaging, spectroscopy, nondestructive evaluation, and homeland security
