The research is exploring the application of object-oriented database management technology for the representation of large-scale biological information such as genetic and molecular data. The data models of these domains are being analyzed and object-oriented models designed and implemented using advanced software engineering techniques in the C + + language and a commercial ODBMS. The run-time query and storage performance of the software system demonstrate the improvements possible over existing relational database systems. The potential commercial application as described by the awardee: Research will result in the replacement of existing relational databases of bio-information with high performance DBMS for timecritical applications.
