DESCRIPTION (Adapted from Applicant's Abstract): This application proposes a Kinetic Acoustic Retinal Evaluation (KARE) device which would non-invasively generate and image vitreal motion as a means of diagnosis and localization of small targets of a variety of retinal disorders. KARE represents a fundamental improvement in kinetic ultrasound, as it eliminates the need for eye movement and allows controlled examination of the kinetic vitreoretinal relationship at specific retinal sites. The ability of KARE to induce vitreal motion in excised porcine eyes will be experimentally determined. Detection and localization of retinal tears and vitreoretinal traction will be compared to current methods in a blind study. A theoretical analysis will be performed to predict tissue heating and associated risk.National Eye Institute (NEI)
