This project addresses the development of a knowledge-based intelligent decision support system (idss) for cancer treatment. Baldur systems corporation has developed and demonstrated a successful database communication technique called intelligent database communication (idc). Idc combines query mapping and optimization, artificial intelligence (ai), and flexible software package interface. The idc approach utilizes advanced ai principles to allow the developer or user to build an individualized universe ofinformation in which data/knowledge sources are defined once. Data or knowledge sources are defined in terms of where (modem telephone number, network), how (passwords, operating systems), and what (commands, menus, file names). These sources are dispatched automatically when needed. The existing idc approach will be combined with a knowledge-based cancer treatment expert system to produce a practical idss for a representative community oncology office practice. Idss programs will result in (1) reduced learning time, (2) enhanced cancer treatment, and (3) motivated users.
