Development of a new microcomputer-based CATI software package is planned that will offer advantages over currently available microcomputer software by fully utilizing networks, providing capabilities for multisite and multimode surveys, and offering compatibility with both a full-featured operating system suitable for an office environment and a more limited operating system suitable for laptop computers. The needs of epidemiological surveys in particular will be considered in the design. Phase I efforts will include specification, design, and design verification. Phase II work will include coding, debugging, and testing of the software. Subsequent documentation, beta testing, revision, and release will occurAwardee's statement of the potential commercial applications of the research:Although computer-assisted data collection methods and CATI in particular have been welcomed enthusiastically by many marketing research firms, private survey organizations, and governmental survey organizations, use of the technology is spreading slowly among epidemiologists. If the needs of this group of researchers can be adequately addressed, an underexploited market could be foundNational Cancer Institute (NCI)
