This research will generate an instructional design for videotapes and print materials to meet the need for practical behavior management strategies of Alzheimer's disease for family caregivers. The product to be developed will offer a realistic, step-by-step approach to preventing and managing problem behaviors and placing those behaviors in the larger context of the disease process. Caregivers will learn a range of potential solutions, and information will be provided concerning how caregivers can learn to accept behavior changes in ways that maintain the patient's dignity and self-esteem. In-depth information will be provided, and specific skills will be developed to enhance effectiveness and give caregivers a sense of confidence in a particular area. The format will be an in-depth analysis of one behavior per videotape. This type of product would supplement and add significant depth to current products on the market. With the potential of increasing numbers of Alzheimer's disease patients in the future, more educational products must be available to family caregivers. This product would be of significant benefit to family caregivers in rural areas where no constant professional assistance is available.

Anticipated Results:
This product can be used by family caregivers who must provide daily care to the patient with Alzheimer's disease. It will give a realistic, step-by-step approach to preventing and managing problem behaviors of these patients. Dissemination can be through support groups, libraries, and the mail. It is particularly needed in rural areas where there is little or no professional assistance.National Institute on Aging
