The proposed cloud based trainer will provide an opportunity for collaborative, adaptive training and evaluation of ATC tasks, rules, and procedures in a simulated virtual environment. The training system will leverage principles of gamification to contribute to the Ready Relevant Learning (RRL) effort and create personalized training of the necessary skills to be delivered a time of need. As a cloud-based solution, the training will provide an on-demand assessment of the problems related to vigilance, communication, and human-automation interaction (e.g., complacency) that are present in daily ATC operations. The innovative team-based game mode will provide trainees with an opportunity to hone teamwork and communication skills, and officers with a measurement of both individual sailor and team performance. Additionally, mini-games will create opportunities for part-task training of specific ATC tasks. The proposed Phase I effort will be devoted to developing design specifications for a gamified ATC trainer prototype to address specific mission-critical needs for Tower and Radar operators.
