In order to ensure the safety, comfort, and effectiveness of submarine personnel, it is imperative that air quality be maintained even in isolated or poorly ventilated areas. A carbon monoxide removal system (CORS) that is compact and low power will be developed that overcomes traditional limitations of CO oxidation catalysts or sorbents at low temperature in humidity containing-environments. Room temperature, water resistant CO oxidation catalyst will be developed and integrated into a standalone system that continuously removes CO from humid air down to safe levels.

Benefit:
The system developed in the proposed program will improve the safety of personnel who must work in enclosed or poorly ventilated workspaces, and will protect them from serious or potentially fatal effects of carbon monoxide buildup. The compact and lightweight CO removal system will also be an attractive product for uses such as industrial work sites or automotive repair garages where tools and equipment can generate CO but adequate ventilation is not always present.
