Optomec and its industry partners propose applying Optomec's proprietary laser engineered net shape (LENS) additive manufacturing technology and methodology to the fabrication of refractory metal components. These fabrications are related to the post-boost control system (PBCS) hot-gas valves and manifold components for the D5 Trident II missile. Phase I activities will involve process development and preliminary characterization of LENS deposited test specimens and sub-scale exemplars for at least two refractory metal alloys of interest to the Navy for feasibility demonstration purposes.

Benefit:
LENS processed components are anticipated to perform equivalent to or better than conventionally processed refractory metal components at a lower cost to manufacture The LENS process's large work envelope (up to 3' x 3' x 5'), high energy beam (2+KW) and free-form fabrication methodology enable the affordable manufacturing of these complex components without costly post-processing forming and tooling. The proposed process developments have dual use applications for various military and commercial advanced propulsion systems.
