Sagetech proposes a program that will give rise to a 150 gram Mark XIIA Level 2 IFF Micro-Transponder with ADS-B that meets all requirements for deployment in a Group 2 UAV. The device will be designed to interface initially with a KIV-77 crypto applique, but will be replaced by a micro-KIV in subsequent phases. Phase I activity will focus on singling out those requirements and tests necessary for Group 2 UAVs and documenting the results. A Phase I Option will do the same for the cryptographic applique. In doing so Sagetech will leverage its deep knowledge of small UAVs: design of the ScanEagle autopilot and avionics module; having worked on a variety of UAVs during their design (e.g., Aerosonde, Golden Eye, and Silver Fox); and having designed and fielded thousands of micro-transponders for deployment on ScanEagle and other airframes.
Benefit: Small UAVs have evolved from novelty items to formal weapon systems. Successful deployment in theaters of war, however, depend on full integration into the electronic battlefield. The DoD AIMS Office is tasked with certifying effective interoperability of IFF transponders, and Mode 5 Level 2 capability is the most recent and best form of encrypted IFF available. Though requirements for operating a UAV in civil airspace have yet to be fully defined, they are certain to include a requirement to carry an FAA-certified (i.e., TSO) Mode S transponder with ADS-B Out capability, similar to the requirements for other civil aircraft called out in 14 CFR 91.215 (transponders) and 92.225 (ADS-B Out). Additionally, because ADS-B In capability serves as an onboard detect-and-avoid system for providing traffic awareness, its carriage will likely be encouraged if not mandated. Presently available mini 0x9D transponders weigh in excess of 3-4 lbs and are accompanied by bulky form factors. With Group 2 UAVs having gross take-off weights as low as 21 lbs, these so-called
