There are significant problems for providing enough coolant and addressing heat flow concerns for the advanced electronics aboard modern avionics platforms in general and the E-2D Hawkeye in particular. Increases in reliability and performance in aircraft are tied to increased electronic content. To meet evolving threats and to take advantage of technology upgrades, the new version of the E-2 also features an entirely new avionics suite that has the potential of increasing heat load in excess of the capacity of the current liquid cooling system. Advanced Products and Services’s novel concept is to combine the two effects for greater electrical efficiency. The part of the solution incorporating thermoelectric cooling has the capability of creating an additional 20 Fahrenheit degree temperature drop in the system upstream from the inlet. The APS solution will meet this challenge in a way that has not been done before by optimizing the heat transfer cycle of the TEC and by scavenging heat energy with a heat to energy scavenging module, manufactured by MicroPower Global. This solution minimizes the additional power draw required for supplemental cooling.
