The proposed effort will demonstrate a corrosion, fatigue and wear-resistant coating that is based on a fundamentally new way of optimizing material performance without the limitation of material property tradeoffs that are common in homogeneous coatings. By leveraging lessons-learned from nature, Modumetal will demonstrate a non-homogeneous, nanolaminated coating system, which exhibits the combination of properties necessary for high performance wear-resistant application, and which will provide a viable alternative to hard cadmium in the marketplace.
