The objective of the proposed work is to develop ultrasonic, non-contact, nondestructive testing technology for marine aluminum structures. Three novel approaches will be evaluated for the marine aluminum weld application. Technology selection will be based demonstrated defect sensitivity and inspection cost per linear feet of weld.

Benefit:
Improved process control for marine structure welds, faster and more cost effective nondestructive testing techniques for welds during manufacture and during in-service repair.

Commercially available inspection technology dedicated to Marine Aluminum Structure Inspection does not exist. While generic inspection technologies are being applied to this application, a transition to dedicated inspection technology is required to realize meaningful total ownership cost reduction. The objective of Phase II is to develop high-speed low-cost inspection technology customized for marine aluminum structures.

1) A faster and more economical inspection alternative, customized for marine aluminum structures 2) Marine structures may remain in-service longer contributing to total ownership cost reduction.
