Phase I

Contract Number: N47408-02-C-7302
Start Date: 2/13/2002    Completed: 8/13/2002
Phase I year
2002
Phase I Amount
$65,824
The proposed Phase I research will develop a sprayable, self-priming, fast cure, flexible, edge retentive, impact and abrasion resistant, polysulfide modified epoxy Novolac cladding for steel immersion/splash zone service. Currently the coatings of steel waterfront structures have a life expectancy of 5 years splash zone service. Maintenance applied coatings give an additional 3 years service prior to reapplication. This required regular maintenance and repair cycle is costly. The initial application of a polysulfide modified epoxy novolac will extend the maintenance cycle, thereby reducing repair costs.

Benefits:
Potential commercial applications will include bridges, roofing, bilges, bulkheads(sheet pile, pipe pile, H-piles, cranes, in/offshore petrochemical structures, water and waste water structures, industrial facilities, contaiment systems, mooring structures, and marine equipment.

Keywords:
splash zone, polysulfide, novolac, cladding
