Phase I

Contract Number: N47408-01-P-6339
Start Date: 2/20/2001    Completed: 7/20/2001
Phase I year
2001
Phase I Amount
$55,660
The proposed Phase I research will develop a sprayable, self-priming, fast cure, flexible, edge retentive, impact and abrasion resistant, polysulfide modified epoxy Novolac cladding for steel immersion/splash zone service. Currently the coatings of steel waterfront structures have a life expectancy of 5 years splash zone service. Maintenance applied coatings give an additional 3 years service prior to reapplication. This required regular maintenance and repair cycle is costly. The initial application of a polysulfide modified epoxy novolac will extend the maintenance cycle, thereby reducing repair costs.

Benefit:
Potential commercial applications will include bridges, roofing, bilges, bulkheads(sheet pile, pipe pile, H-piles, cranes, in/offshore petrochemical structures, water and waste water structures, industrial facilities, contaiment systems, mooring structures, and marine equipment.

Keywords:
Polysulfide, Sprayable , High Solids

Phase II

Contract Number: N47408-01-C-7225
Start Date: 6/22/2001    Completed: 6/22/2002
Phase II year
2001
Phase II Amount
$194,508
This project will involve the final development, field testing and initial commercialization phase of a newly developed sprayable polysulfide based coating system. This 100% solids, low cure stress coating has a variety of potential applications that are based on the coating or are derivatives of the technology. The coating is expected to be sold to the marine, bridge, petroleum storage and chemical/fuel containment market segments among others.
