For long term deployment of oceanographic instrumentation, it is highly desirable to have a system to provide an independent means of recharging batteries. Recent advances in mooring dynamics analysis open new possibilities of using the time varying tension on a mooring line as a potential source of energy. This energy source will be quantified and compared with other more conventional sources, including solar, current and wave energy. A device will be designed to extract this energy without compromising the structural integrity of the mooring.
