Amorphous Alloy Corp (AAC) proposes development of amorphous refractory alloy coatings that are adherent and easily applied to reduce erosion, wear, and corrosion over a broad temperature range on advanced weapon system components (such as internal surfaces of gun barrels). The proposed coatings are a spin off from a "leading edge" commercial electroplating process utilized for hard-facing of oil well drill bits, and automotive engine components. A process applicable to gun barrels will be developed utilizing the commercial alloys as baseline. Samples will be prepared and characterized, and promising candidates will be recommended for scale-up and full scale testing in Phase II.
