Bandwidth and power-efficient coding/modulation schemes are required to increase the reliable communications throughput of Naval uhf satellite communications systems. The objective of this effort is to develop such schemes based on a trellis coded modulation approach using a multidimensional signal set. The capacity increase derived from larger coding gains is maximized by efficient use of the available power and bandwith. The higher decoding complexity is handled by developing high throughput parallel systolic array decoder architectures that are suitable for VLSI implementation.
