The objective of this development is to determine the technical feasibility of developing a three dimensional vision based passive object recognition system capable of generating three dimensional coordinate location information in real time at video frame rates of 30 frames per second. The system configuration under investigation will utilize parallel processing of raw video input from multiple cameras. High speed processing hardware such as very high speed integrated circuits currently being developed through the DOD will be investigated for their potential as high speed image processors for real time object recognition. This research will establish the feasibility of providing a real time programmable object recognition and orientation system capable of providing robot path alteration data in real time.
