The preliminary design of a comprehensive software system called the Structural Mechanics Artificially Intelligent Environment (SMARTIE) has been developed to provide a tool for the fully automated design of a broad class of mechanical products. The design embodies a multidisciplinary approach that blends state-of-the-art concepts in computer science, interactive graphics, finite element analysis, design synthesis and numerical methods. Unlike other available systems, it is directed to the design engineer who is not an expert in finite element analysis or optimization. The software functions efficiently on a wide range of computer configurations, and it greatly reduces the time and cost of product design. The software system will is engineered to be easily enhanced and maintained, and it provides a flexible framework for the assimilation of new technologies as they develop.STATUS: Phase I Only
