An advanced photonic time delay approach is proposed that offers a fast switching speed, on the order of a nanosecond. Losses are overcome by introducing integrated, distributed optical amplifiers. Long delays are implemented using optical fibers, while shorter delay my be implemented on-chip for a switched delay line architecture.
