BMDO recognizes the huge benefits that can be realized through development of new, low cost, rapid manufacturing technology for the fabrication of fiber-reinforced resin matrix composites. It also recognizes the advantages of developing creative procedures for the on-line process monitoring of these composites during fabrication. M.E. Harris & Co. (MEHC) proposes to develop manufacturing methods and on-line process monitoring procedures by developing Electroset Technology for fiber-reinforced composite manufacture. This technology uses electrical current to cure both thin and thick polymer resins. The proposed technology will: provide a fast method (...in minutes) to cure fiber-reinforced composites that: is energy efficient, uses low cost equipment, is virtually unlimited in the size and dimensions of the composites produced; provided a reliable, low cost, non-intrusive method of monitoring the extent of cure during the curing process. As part of the Phase I effort, MEHC will develop the manufacturing system, formulate the resins, and demonstrate feasibility of both the manufacturing method and its associated process monitoring technique through the fabrication of sample composite coupons. Lower cost fiber reinforced composites for : aerospace (military and commercial), sports and medical equipment. Thick composite curing. Process monitoring of electrically controlled curing of composites. Energy-efficient composite manufacture.
