An InGaAs/InP based laser structure is proposed based on a novel approach for truly continuous wavelength tuning over a wide range with negligible power dissipation associated with the laser tuning. The laser structure will be grown by MOCVD and fabricated into a tunable laser with an initial tuning range up to 70 A in Phase I. Once we demonstrate the concept, a widely and truly continuously tunable InGaAs/InP laser will be fabricated in Phase II with a tuning range over a few hundred angstroms for a great range of commercial and defence applications. A truly continuously tunable laser without extra power dissipation which will have applications in the area of remote laser spectroscopy, range-doppler lidar and radar, and photonic communications.
