Continuous monitoring of water is of the highest priority toensure environmental compliance, as well as performance of numerousindustrial processes. One of the most difficult and critical parts ofcontinuous water analysis is the determination of metal ionconcentrations. Even at trace levels, metal ions can ruin variousindustrial processes, and cause serious damage to the environment. ECITechnology, Inc., has developed:a. the stripping voltammetry method andb. a technique of electrochemical sample preparation, which are used forlaboratory determination of trace levels of metals in various solutions. The proposed system will be based on these as well as otherelectrochemical techniques. Phase I research will address the followingissues:a. interference by various inorganic and organic substances on continuousstripping voltammetry determination of copper, lead(II) and cadmium ionsin the standard solutions;b. feasibility of techniques to eliminate the interference;c. test of proposed system with samples of actual drinking, natural andindustrial waters.Continuous and complete information of water composition will:a. prevent the pollution of water and food products,b. prevent rejects in industries, andc. create the foundation for an automated control of industrialprocesses, as well as waste and drinking water treatment systems.
